3 Reasons Why Your Diet is Failing

With bikini season quickly approaching, you may find yourself frantically trying to achieve that summer bod. But your weekly check-in with the scale confirms that you can’t quite seem to shed those stubborn LB’s. You may be making common dieting mistakes even the most habitual dieters make. It’s time to get down to the facts and get back on track with healthy weight loss strategies. Here’s why your diet plan isn’t working:

You’re not eating enough.

So you ordered that new swimsuit a few sizes too small and plan on slashing your calorie intake to make it fit. This classic weight loss mistake won’t help you drop 3 sizes and it certainly won’t leave you feeling too hot. Whether you’re restricting overall calories or simply not eating enough carbohydrates, both can have a negative impact on your body.

Carbs are quick to get the boot in preparation for bikini season due to the rapid weight loss some experience. Cutting back on any particular food group not only leaves your body low on nutrients and energy, but these drastic diets aren’t sustainable for long. After all, the definition of “diet” is “the kinds of food that a person habitually eats.” Trust us, nobody can give up carbs 4ever. Plus, we all know the result of starving ourselves for multiple days. Once you break and binge, you’ll end up regaining that lost weight (plus some).

Having a slightly lower caloric intake than your caloric output will result in healthy weight loss, but drastically cutting calories will seriously throw your hormones and body functions out of wack. Your body doesn’t like being deprived (who does!?) and as a result will reduce the efficiency of your thyroid, adrenal, and sex hormones to conserve energy.

You’re relying on “diet foods.”

Diet soda! Fat-free! Carb-free! Don’t let these seemingly healthier options food you. When foods are altered to be lower fat, why do you think it still tastes so good? Usually that tasty “diet” flavor is a result of added sugar and sodium. That’s why you’re usually better off with the real thing, rather than suffering through a box of tasteless cardboard crackers with no real promise of any nutritional value.

Another common diet disaster; diet soda. We hate to burst your bubble, but swapping a regular Coke for diet isn’t doing anything for your waistline. Studies have consistently shown that trying to trick your sweet tooth with artificial sweeteners not only doesn’t work, but also increases your body’s need for a sugary fix. Artificial sweeteners have also been shown to disrupt the microbes in your gut, actually leading to weight gain.

You’re stressed out.

For all you hustlers, stress is an unavoidable part of life. However, when stress begins taking a toll on your health, it’s time to make a change. Keeping your cortisol (stress hormone) levels high has been shown to lead to type 2 diabetes and adrenal fatigue. Not only that, consistently elevated cortisol levels leads to leptin and insulin resistance. This will keep your body fat high, especially about the mid section. So if that stubborn belly fat is leaving you frustrated, it may be your cortisol levels in a funk, not what you’ve been eating.

So how do you find your ideal diet and achieve healthy weight loss? By choosing foods that make you feel good. Get back to the basics and focus on what food was intended for – nourishment to support and empower your body. If you feel drained, lethargic and lousy on a low carb diet, that’s usually a sign your body isn’t getting what it needs. So ditch the starvation diets, cut back the stress in your life and most importantly, eat real food.
